flayn bites down on her lip to muffle a shriek and stumbles back, her eyes wide. in her hand she's got the blade from the shaving kit, but - she hesitates when she recognizes the person inside the snake's mouth. (there's just one snake, but they each see a different person, because this hotel is an equal opportunity traumatizer.)]

[she just looks furiously angry when she sees who it is, and she tries to slash at the body with her sword. but she really is too weak for this, and she'll get tossed by the snake right back out of the room, landing in a heap.]

[seeing harrow get tossed aside gets flayn moving again - she starts forward for the snake, but -

nope she gets yote back out, too, and lands on the ground hard.]

...ow.

[outsidebones]

[she gets up to scramble, looking for her sword - ah, there it is. she'll tug it over to her side and then collapse back down.]

What was that thing?

I do not know, but... if that is the sort of thing we should expect from this place... we all ought to be on our guard.

[she sits up, then gets to her feet and leans down to offer harrow a hand]

Are you alright?

[outsidebones]

[she'll take the hand after a moment's awkward hesitation, getting to her feet a little bit stiffly. she glances back at the door.]

Ugh. Did it have a face in it for you?

[she nods]

I assume it did for you as well?

[outsidebones]

It did, yes. That's a bit rude.

Whomever decided it was a good idea to put something like that behind those doors is a thoroughly unpleasant person.

A nasty mind at work. It gives us a bit of insight into our captor, don't you think?

[she nods]

It is certainly a reminder that we should not let our guards down. Although, I would have hoped that no one needed such a reminder.

I would have as well, but...someone wants to send a message, don't they?

It seems so. I would like to send a very strongly worded message back to them.

There must be someone, somewhere. What sort of hotel does not have any staff?

Well, one managed principally by ghosts, it would seem.

[she sighs]

One would think that ghosts, who potentially have an eternity ahead of them to learn various skills should they manage to avoid being exorcised, would be a little better at this. Honestly, I am a little disappointed in them.

Oh, not at all. Typically, if they manage to stay out of the river at all, they are mad and ravenous.

Oh... is that how it is for ghosts in your world?

[outsidebones]

Yes. Not in every circumstance, but typically. I have known perhaps one or two who have managed to retain their sanity despite attempting to resist the pull of the river.

I see... I knew there would likely be differences from world to world, but I had not realized they would be so stark.

Are ghosts different where you are?

[fishingforcompliments]

A bit, yes. There are certainly resentful spirits which are dangerous, and seem to have taken leave of their senses, but... there are stronger ghosts who have retained their sense of self, even in a different form, as well.
