The... shadows thing? The way he phrased it made it sound like he didn't have a choice either way when the shadows told him they could keep his hostage safe. He said he declined them and they just possessed him anyway.

The only motive I can think of to lie and yet still to ruin his own arm and capitulate so readily to execution is if he had accomplices he was protecting.
