I don't know if I'd say it's that bad. I'm more of a cocoa person myself, though.
[he frowns lightly at the next part, though.]
I don't really get why they're keeping us waiting, either... I mean, whoever's behind this, they were the ones who pushed us into coming here. It's weird.
I think many among us expect to learn more as soon as tomorrow, and yet - we never met the one who gave us reason to go, or at least did not until the end. I'm still uncertain.
Like... As kind of a final showdown thing? We had something similar, too, but we still got more information after a while from a group of people who were helping oversee the separate groups we were split into. Were you just on your own until the very end?
Not at all. We had eight Avatars guiding us, but none of them were the ones who brought us there. They had simply already been there, caught in the same web as we had been caught.
With any luck. That, and...rules. At the least, once one knows the incentives, one can prepare.
I think we always thought there might be secret reasons our killers had, but ultimately, there weren't. Most of them were merely cynical, and selfish. Thought those of us who wanted to win by different means to be foolish.
Mm, well... There were two groups of people killing where I was from, and people were able to realize why one group was doing it pretty easily, but the second group had to wait until the end to explain why they were doing what they were. There weren't any incentives explained in the rules.
[he frowns as he continues.]
I really hope... I mean, if the things we're used to from our last groups start happening here again, I really hope it's not for the reasons people from your situation had. Either way, people would get hurt, but - I do think the motivation behind it matters, at least a little.
Ah. I would have said the opposite. If people are killing for personal gain, all one must do is convince them that they will fail at gaining what it is they desire. Catching them regularly is a powerful disincentive.
Isn't it just possible that you always were, but it didn't come up? It only takes a handful, after all. Three or four or five out of thirty odd people.
One of the groups I mentioned earlier that killed weren't really themselves when they did it, and the other group was doing it to - protect people, in a way. People didn't figure out exactly why the second group was acting until the very end, but I think they figured out pretty quickly because of the people in that group they found that their motivations at least weren't selfish or cruel. And since there weren't any additional incentives beyond that... I mean, at least we knew that people weren't going to stab each other in the back just to get ahead. You know?
[he sighs, though.]
Though - that doesn't exactly make it better when people kept getting killed anyways.
Well, the first ones I mentioned, the ones who weren't themselves... Somehow they were forced into thinking that one person was a huge threat to the rest of the group, and everyone would get hurt if they didn't kill that person. Of course that wasn't true, but they believed it as long as they needed to. The second group, um, the group I was a part of - it's kind of a long story, but essentially, if we didn't kill someone on Thursday night, they would get stuck in that place forever and their soul would be erased eventually. We knew that if we did it, though, there was at least a chance to bring them back eventually instead of losing them completely.
[she listens, and then, once he's finished, slowly inspects her bitten fingernails, thinking.]
...You know, I really might advise you to lie about that. You haven't taken a risk telling me, as it turns out, but you never know how people will react to these things. [a sigh.]
Or maybe not. The fact that you'd come out and say it is a bit relieving. Anyway, that's all quite understandable, as motivations go, so I see what you mean. Utterly different from our experience, where we were told from early on to consider the dead lost for good. It didn't turn out that way, but...
I mean... I'm not planning on standing in the courtyard and announcing it to everyone, but it feels weird to hide it completely, too. I'm pretty sure Bradley is going to bring it up to people even if I don't, anyways.
[he nods.]
I really hope that's common between all our groups, too... I mean, that everyone came back safe in the end. It'd definitely be a relief.
Ah. I do admit, we are fortunate - no bad blood among the group of us five. None of us killed one another or were involved in anything of the sort. Otherwise, I'm certain it gets a bit awkward.
He did take it surprisingly well, given everything, but - yeah. Awkward is a word for it.
[he nods.]
It'd be nice if we didn't have anyone to bring back by the end of this since everyone turned out fine, but... I'm pretty sure none of us really expect that to happen at this point.
I do, yeah. I didn't get to know Hope and Alphinaud too well, so I can't really vouch for them completely, but I never saw them acting cruel or anything. Bradley and Aikawa... are both a little unpredictable for different reasons, but they can both be really nice, too. Claude's a good person, too.

But with any luck we'll get rooms way before that, so. At least there's that.

Coercion is another matter.

Right, but... I'd rather not be surrounded by people who would kill each other for personal gain.
